Rolland Patillo

My name is Rolland Patillo. I am a professor at the Morehouse School of Medicine. I studied with George Gey and researched the HeLa cells. While I studied with Gey, I was one of the only African Americans working. This put into perspective the lack of involvement of blacks in the medical and science fields. After her death, I became close to the Lacks family by purchasing the headstone for her grave. Being close to the family, I served as the middleman between the Lacks family and many researchers and journalists. I later took over Gey's reproductive tract cell bank, moving it from Hopkins to the Morehouse School of Medicine. I later began hosting a women's health conference in honor of the Lacks family, called the HeLa Conference.

My name is Lawerence Lacks. I’m the oldest child of the Henrietta Lacks. I remember a lot about my mother because I was there with her for all that long time even through her illness. I have made some mistakes in my life and experienced a lot too, for example I went to the war. But I always cared about my family, I’m always gonna be there for my family. Sonny Lacks

I'm Sonny Lacks, son of Henrietta Lacks. My mother's cells have been used for research in Hopkins. She died because of cancer, left father, me and other siblings very early. However, Hopkins didn't acknowledge any family member about their continuing research, which was using my mother's cells.    I never trusted Hopkins, "Back then they did things, especially to black folks. John Hopkins was known for experimenting on black folks. They would snatch them off the street" (307). “John Hopkin didn’t give us no information about anything. That was the bad part.
