Henrietta Lacks: Opinion on doning organs
“I think people are morally obligated to allow their bits and pieces to be used to
advance knowledge to help others. Since everybody benefits, everybody can accept the small risks of having their tissue scraps used
in research.” This is a quote from David Korn,
vice provost for research at Harvard University.
In response to his quote I would like to state that people should not be obligated to donate parts of their body to medical research. I think it is an amazing thing for people who want to and are willing to donate their body to science. A persons body is sometimes the one thing they have power over, or means something to them. No body should make you do something you don't want to do. I obviously have been victim to a horrible disease, as well as having my cells taken from me without my direct consent and being tested. I think it is amazing the amount of medical advances and cures for diseases that my immortal self replicating cells (HeLa cells) have been able to accomplish. Although I'm so happy to been able to be a part of this, I don't think that people should be obligated to donate parts of their body. I agree that people should donate organs or cells, but it should not be an obligation. That is a singles persons choice and no one else is allowed to make it. Some people do not believe in surgery, for religious reasons, mental reasons, or others. In no way should a person be forced to donate parts of them if it is something that they strongly disagree with. It would be like saying that a Jewish person can't be buried in their family grave because they have to get a tattoo. A persons body is their own choice, their own property and what they want to do with it is up to them and no one should be able to force you to do anything with it that is unwanted.
